Online & In-Person – Pastured and Free-Range Poultry Workshop: Coop Design, Regulations, Economics, & Marketing

The Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program's Pastured / Free-Range Poultry Project presents this three-hour workshop as part of a five-part series that is offered live and online. This session focuses on design and material considerations for coops, as well as regulations for free-range and pastured poultry, and it will feature round-table discussion among farmer speakers who will shed some light on what the economics of pastured poultry farming as well as some marketing techniques that have worked well.

Coop Design (Dr. Todd Kelman):
This talk will focus on design and material considerations for coops for small flocks raised in a free-range or pastured poultry environment. Dr. Todd Kelman is a veterinarian and engineer at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
Regulations (Ann Baier):
This talk will focus on regulations for free-range and pastured poultry and include resources for further information. Ann Baier is a sustainable and organic agriculture specialist with the National Center for Appropriate Technology.
Economics and Marketing (farmer panel):
This round-table discussion will feature farmer speakers who will shed some light on what the economics of pastured poultry farming as well as some marketing techniques worked well (or not!) for their businesses. Guest speakers include Dan Jones from Islote Farms, Trini Campbell from Riverdog Farm, and Ross Shoop from St. John's Poultry.
